Slumping Economy Halts Buffalo Hotel Construction

Cheektowaga, N.Y. (AP) - Add five hotels to the growing list of casualties from the dismal economy. Two Marriott properties and a Hyatt Place are among five hotels that have stopped construction across the street from the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

The airport in suburban Cheektowaga saw the number of air travelers fall by 10 percent in January. A combination of the Canadian dollar declining in value, the credit crunch, and the recession are being blamed for the slowdown.

A new Fairfield Inn is still scheduled to open across from the airport this summer.
