The recession has affected and closed many businesses…but how about the pet industry?
Carl Ackerbauer, owner of an exotic pet shop in DeWitt says the recession has not negatively effected his business at all.
Customers agree with Ackerbauer because they find themselves always in the pet store. One customer says, “People aren’t traveling like they used to. Twenty years ago, get in the car with the family [and drive]…that’s gone. People are staying home a lot more, but it gets boring at home, which leads you to home things...and these pet stores have made quite a lot of money off of us.”
Another private breeder in Syracuse says he has sold hundreds of corn snakes, king snakes, bearded dragons and all sorts of reptiles. He said he recently made $47,000 and he used the money to pay off the loan on his apartment. He says when buying new pets, more and more people are turning to private breeders rather than big corporations because private breeders sell animals at a lower price.

If you can't count on your restaurants and other businesses to stick around...it seems you can count on your local pet shop.
