Has Your Hobby of Gambling Gone Too Far?

State officials say nearly one million New Yorkers are affected by gambling addictions. Some gamblers are as young as middle schoolers.

The state is calling attention to the problem and has designated March 1-7 as Problem Gambling Awareness Week to educate New Yorkers on the warning signs of problem gambling and the availability of services to help.

Karen Carpenter-Palumbo, Commissioner, says unlike alcohol and drug addictions, with physical warning signs, problem gambling is more easily hidden, but similarly hurts addicts’ families.
Her office has established a so-called HOPEline at 1-877-8-HOPENY for confidential calls to clinically trained professionals for support.
