The future of the New Process Gear plant hangs in the balance as workers vote on contract concessions. Workers are being asked to vote in favor of these concessions so that the plant can save $50 million by July. They are being asked to give up a week of vacation and a couple of holidays in an effort to make the plant function more efficiently.
United Auto Workers' leaders say that Magna International Inc. will close the transmission parts plant, if the workers vote against the contract. Union leaders say it could keep operating if $50 million is saved, but hourly wages would still be cut.
Workers are voting on the deal today and tomorrow. The East Syracuse plant employs approximately 1,400 workers.
